Description

Impact investing has emerged as an important and expanding part of global development finance, channeling capital toward social and environmental objectives alongside financial performance. Philanthropies, development finance institutions, corporations, and private investors increasingly use investment-based approaches to address challenges related to climate change, livelihoods, education, and inclusive growth. As this field grows, expectations for evidence, accountability, and learning have also intensified.

Evaluation and impact measurement and management play a central role in this context. Decisions about where to deploy capital, how to assess contribution, and how to manage risk are often made under conditions of uncertainty and time pressure. Traditional evaluation approaches that focus primarily on retrospective assessment are not always well suited to these decision environments. Impact investing therefore requires evaluative practices that inform strategy, governance, and performance across portfolios, not only after investments are made but throughout the investment lifecycle.

This workshop introduces participants to the core concepts and practices that connect evaluation and IMM to impact investing decision-making. Through structured case examples drawn from impact investing, climate finance, and philanthropic portfolios, participants examine how evidence is framed, generated, interpreted, and used in practice. The emphasis is on understanding how evaluative thinking supports decisions related to materiality, contribution, performance, and accountability, rather than on technical methods or financial modeling.

The workshop is interactive and discussion-based, combining short conceptual inputs with case analysis and guided reflection. It is designed to provide global development practitioners with a clear and practical entry point into impact investing, while equipping them with evaluation and IMM perspectives that can be applied across programs, portfolios, and institutions.

Workshop Objectives:

The workshop aims to build participants’ foundational understanding of how evaluation and impact measurement and management (IMM) are used in impact investing. After the workshop, participants:

  • understand what impact investing is and how it differs from traditional development finance and grantmaking;
  • are familiar with the role of evaluation and IMM in informing strategy, governance, and performance in impact-oriented investments;
  • understand key concepts such as materiality, contribution, and accountability as they apply to impact investing decisions;
  • recognize how evidence is framed, generated, and used across the investment lifecycle; and
  • are able to apply evaluative thinking from impact investing contexts to broader program and portfolio decision-making.
Recommended for:

This workshop is recommended for evaluators, learning and accountability professionals, development practitioners, policy advisors, and commissioners who are interested in understanding impact investing or in strengthening the use of evidence in investment- and portfolio-level decision-making. It is particularly relevant for professionals working in or alongside multilateral organizations, development finance institutions, philanthropic organizations, and other actors engaging with impact-oriented capital.

Level:

This is an introductory-level workshop. It is intended for participants who are new to impact investing or to the application of evaluation and IMM in investment and financing contexts.

 Prerequisites:

No prior experience in impact investing is required. Familiarity with basic evaluation, monitoring, or learning concepts is helpful but not necessary. The workshop is designed to be accessible to participants from a range of professional backgrounds in global development.
